5 Things to Pack for the Au Train River Paddle

Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned pro, paddling the Au Train is one of the most enjoyable experiences that the Upper Peninsula has to offer. Here are five things everyone should bring with them when they’re going down the Au Train!

  1. Snacks & Drinks
You’re going to paddle up an appetite! The trip is anywhere from 2 hours-6 hours depending on how many stops you choose to make along the way. Bring high-protein snacks and something to keep you hydrated. Feel free to pack a cooler most will fit in a kayak but most definitely in a canoe.

If you are bringing snacks, please be respectful of the area and dispose of your trash and cans responsibly. Bring a trash bag with you to put everything in to dispose of at the end of your float. Larger trash bins are located at the beginning and the end of your float. Lets work together to keep the river clean.

  2. Waterproof Containers/Dry Bag
Tip happens! Your keys, phone, and any electronics should go in a waterproof case, or at the very least a plastic baggie. If you’ve got a dry bag, bring a towel and a dry change of clothes in case of inclement weather.

  3. Sunscreen & Bug Spray
Remember… you are on a river which is home to bugs. Black flies and mosquitoes are probably going to be hanging out with you, but if you bring bug spray you will avoid being bitten. It can also get really HOT in the Yoop, and that sun is strong even on cloudy days. Wear a 30 SPF and re-apply every 2 hours to avoid sunburn.

  4. Underwater Camera or GoPro
    These are just plain fun.

  5. Bluetooth Speaker
Jam out while you paddle! Please be respectful of other paddlers on the river. *Remember to take this with you when your done! It’s the most common item left behind.

No matter what, you are guaranteed to have a great time down the Au Train!

Just incase you forget anything we do have items available. *Waterproof cell phone covers-$6.00, Mini bottles of sunscreen-$4.00, and bottled water-$1.00 and chips $1.00 as supplies last.
